A brief history of Colonial Wigs:

Colonial America was a fascinating time in history and one of the things that sets it apart from other time periods is the Colonial Wig. Many Colonial historians claim that it was King Louis X that was responsible for the introduction of colonial wigs. In 1630 he wore what is said to be the first colonial wig; he wore this wig to cover up his balding hair. By the end of the 17th Century, what we know call Colonial Wigs had become a basic part of mens fashion in England. When the pilgrims first came to America, they brought this Colonial Wig style with them.

Colonial wigs remained an in style fashion accessory for at least 2 centuries but over this time period the type of wig that was in style changed. It is much like today with different hair cuts being in fashion every other week - In colonial America, different wig styles were in fashion all the time. Naturally at first the King Louie style of Colonial Wig was the thing to have. King Louies Colonial Wig was one with very tight curls and a shallow thin bottom. As the Colonial Wig styles changed, so did the color choice of wigs in colonial America. At first it was dark browns and blacks that were in but as time went on, light colors became more popular. Attempts to bleach wigs were not successful and this is when the powder method was invented. Powdered Colonial Wigs remained in style until the late 17th century and by that time it became unpopular to don a Colonial Wig.
